Saturday Lie-In

Google says it's 94F and I can't disagree. Remember, no fans or aircon!

Thanks to the seemingly neverending heat there were problems with the electrical products. Our modem and router sputtered and died within minutes of each other as I was doing [personal profile] pocky_slash's writing chat thingy. Luckily, I managed to resuscitate both by unplugging and sticking it under my mother's ancient ceiling fan until cool. A quick open and spray with compressed air later, they rose from the gadget graveyard. My laptop, however, is still burning the heck out of my left wrist. I cleaned it yesterday and if it wasn't the dustbunnies accumulated inside, I'm going to hate having to call HP for some answers. Their tech guys always eventually tell me to back up everything, wipe the hd clean, and re-install. Hell no, especially since I didn't spring for the $20 for the Vista CD. Besides, I'm sure it's a hardware problem, the cheap buggers.

I still did a bout of cardio and weights in this heat. By the way, if anyone is interested in purchasing an exercise DVD to slim down for summer, Self's Bikini Body Fast is fantastic. If you're a casual exerciser who wants to squeeze in a 30 minute workout every other day, this is it. All you need is a pair of dumbbells 2-5lbs and a pair of sneakers/trainers. Eh, I work out barefoot and thankfully hadn't any injuries so far. The cover claims results in 4 weeks, but I felt and saw changes after a week. Now in my second week, I actually see less of the thigh jiggle. Your mileage may vary, though I highly recommend the DVD especially considering I picked it up at Ross for $6!

Flicking through the latest issue of Self Magazine, I came aross an article about the Part-Time Vegan. Ooh, I thought, that's just like me! Or as I call myself, a Partegan! As Self defines the term, a part-time vegan is a person who periodically refrains from consuming animal products, including dairy. The example given was someone eating strictly vegan on weekdays and adding seafood, cheese, eggs to her diet on the weekends. 'A partially plant-based diet is higher in disease-fighting phytonutrients and lower in calories and saturated fat,' states Self contributing editor Janis Jibrin, but she also encourages followers to get enough calcium.

This is exactly what had worried me. These days I'm absolutely vegan, except for the very rare occassions (like birthdays) I will indulge in a bit of seafood and meat. But as the price of soymilk has soared, my main source of calcium has been severely curtailed. Although it's unlikely I'll end up like this poor vegan girl who has rickets at the age of 12, it's still constantly on my mind. It's not like I can turn back to regular milk as I'm lactose-intolerant AND dairy aggravates my eczema and asthma. I guess the answer will have to lie in multivitamin and calcium tablets.

Here's my plan for the remainder of the weekend: post the ficlets from the writing chat thingy, watch another David Lynch film (Blue Velvet) but not right before bed, post the Obama mega-link roundup, make a slushy with all the apricots in the backyard, freeze my underwear :P, stay up for the Law & Order SVU marathon, and finally, spend a couple of hours listening to the Clash. Phew, now that's a weekend in!
