Sundays are for Masterpiece Theatre
Apr. 13th, 2008 11:00 pmSaturday may be my night for back-to-back-to-back Law & Orders, but Sundays are reserved for period pieces. What is it about the costume drama that attracts female viewership? Is it the exquisite curls, the tight bodice, the dashing men? Or is it the r-o-m-a-n-c-e? Not quite the romance of the time to be sure, that wouldn't do for the modern woman. Who could forget the origins of the current crop of sexed-up period pieces, when Colin Firth's Darcy jumped into a pool to cool his ardour?
Tonight's presentation is the ITV adaptation of EM Forster's Room With A View. I remember coming across a copy in my year 11 English class, thinking it one of those boring travelogues, and passing it up for Graham Greene's Brighton Rock. Now that's a rock n' roll novel. But a good review somewhere put me in the mood for a love story.
One thing the review had spot on was the piece seeming like a commercial for Florence, Italy. Other than that, it was good enough to make me want to head down to the library and pick out the novel. Oh, and not to give away spoilers but the tv ending and novel ending differ according to wikipedia. ITV had to keep reeeal. Wow, that were a crap Geordie accent.
Anyhoo, some other business to get out of the way:
- It was unbelievable hot today; the mercury rose to 90 degrees near my area, which is amazing for a place up a hill and less than 5 miles from the ocean. And it's April! What is it going to be blamed on now, global warming or El Nino?
- LA Times' Image section has a great list of online fashion retailers, including vintage and sites to help create an outfit from scratch
- LAT's Opinion page has the article 'Men Who Explains Things'; naturally it's about the breed of older men who see fit to 'educate' the 'girls' they meet with their sometimes faulty wisdom. We've all been there, but why is it so persistent with men of a certain generation to act so patronising? After all, it's not the bloody Victorian times.
- Sad news of an artist who never finished her goal of hitch-hiking from Italy to the Middle East dressed as a bride. She was found murdered in Turkey yesterday. Hitch-hiking was her way of showing people could be trusted. Life is just not fair. Rest in peace.
