News: The other man on the podium
Oct. 19th, 2008 08:09 pmVia BBC News: When Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave a gloved Black Power salute on the Olympic podium in October 1968 it sent a shockwave through sport. But what happened to the other man on the platform?
The other man was Australian Peter Norman, who participated in the controversial moment by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. For this action he was ostracised by the Australian Olympic and sporting establishment, and retired soon after despite his enormous talent. During the 2000 Sydney Olympics Norman was further given the shaft by not being invited to participate in the 'lap of honour'. The US Olympic team however, did not forget and invited him to stay at their lodgings, recognising him as one of their own.
