- LAist reports on an initiative to legalise Marijuana in California that might show up on the ballot -- Marijuana will be taxed through a system of stamps and licenses--a $5 stamp will be required for the sale of an eighth ounce of marijuana and a $50 annual license will be required for the growth of one marijuana plant. To protect participants and encourage participation in the system, such licenses and stamps will be available anonymously in stores where marijuana is sold.
Don't get me wrong, I can't stand weed or potheads, but this makes plenty of sense.
- Sometimes it takes an atheist with Alzheimer's disease to show the Church of England what it ought to be. When I read this sentence I thought, Terry Pratchett! Pratchett's quote '...while churchgoing did not figure in my family's plans for the sabbath, practically all the Ten Commandments were obeyed by instinct and a general air of reason, and kindness and decency prevailed. Belief was never mentioned at home, but right actions were taught by daily example', in a recent interview about what the C of E is about is the subject of this Guardian column trying to decipher why it seems as though homosexuality is the main reason the Anglicans are rowing.
- Italy's highest appeal court has ruled that it is acceptable to discriminate against Roma on the grounds that they are thieves. Previously, Italy's Interior minister, Roberto Maroni, announced plans to fingerprint all of Italy's Roma, including children. This is racist, make no bones about it. What next, round them up and put them in camps as in during WWII?
- Robert Mugabe hugs his counterparts at the recent African Summit, eager to preen after a 'victory' amidst reports of his supporters' cruelty and violence.
- The California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice calls the state's death penalty process dysfunctional and recommends more lifein without parole sentences.
