Context: LAist is responding to Jonah Goldberg, a well-known conservative whose editorials now feature in the LA Times. His most recent op-ed piece, Forced Servitude in America?, is on the issue of compulsory service. I kid you not, the man starts off with this line:
There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery.
For what purpose is the LA Times publishing this obvious red-rag-to-a-bull? Sales, of course. No wonder no one ever takes the paper seriously anymore.
