Author's Notes/Warnings: Inspired by my first time to Build-A-Bear Workshop at Disneyland. *ashamed* My friend and I were the drunk girls.
'DUDE! THIS LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM!'
Cissie rolled her eyes. It was Friday afternoon, which meant the college students nearby had decided start their weekend early. And for some reason, that included sorority types teetering drunk in on four-inch heels to make custom teddy bears.
'OH MY GOD, I KNOW!'
She pinched the bridge of her nose.
'HEY YOU.'
'Miss, keep your voice down.'
The girl blinked her heavily mascara-ed eyelashes. 'OH, OH.' She smashed into her friend, lifting a finger to her lips. 'We might shcare the bears. SHHH.'
Cissie glanced around the store, envying the mothers and daughters trying their best to ignore the spectacle. 'Right. Anyway, what can I do you for?'
A bear skin was shoved into her face. Cissie pushed it away, and gritted her teeth. 'I see you're ready to have your teddy bear stuffed. Right this way.'
They managed to follow her to the stuffing apparatus, where Cissie took a seat. 'Is your bear going to be soft, medium, or hard?'
The girls giggled at the exact same pitch.
'Hard it is,' Cissie muttered. The bear skin was slipped over a metal rod, and she pressed on a pedal, slowly filling the bear up with cotton stuffing.
Her mind drifted off, ignoring the squeals of delight from the drunks. Who knew the former Arrowette would end up working part-time at a toy store to help pay for college? If only Young Justice had a scholarship fund in place. She sighed. Those were good times, even if it meant the occasional threat of death by supervillains. Having the gang around made life easier to deal.
'That's a big boy,' cooed one of the girls.
Cissie snapped out of the reverie and eased her foot off the pedal. 'Your bear's nearly done. But first...' She reached down beside the machine and held up a plastic jar. 'Pick out a heart for the birth ceremony.'
They selected a solid red stuffed heart.
'Can I kiss it before it goes in the bear?'
Cissie shrugged, and watched as the girl did just that.
'Here, lemme,' said her friend, taking the heart. She placed it in between her formidable breasts and jiggled them a bit. Then she held it out again.
There was also an oath and a speech to go with the birth ceremony, but Cissie changed her mind. 'Uh, just... just place it in the bear.' She laced up the bear's back and gave it a pat all over. 'Do you have a name in mind?'
The girls glanced at each other, and one of them brandished a set of bear clothes out of thin air.
'Issh Shuperbear!' cried the girls.
'All he needs ish a leather jacket,' added one, stroking the bear down its front provocatively.
'Idiot, that wash his old coshtume!' Her friend gave Cissie a long-suffering look. 'Amirite?'
She felt a lump rise in her throat. 'I'm not sure I--'
'Almosh done!' The bear swayed in mid-air, now clad in jeans and a black shirt. The girl attached to the bear shook her head, sadly. 'I really liked hish jacket.'
Her friend sighed. 'And the Hawaiian shirt.'
'And those really cute shunglasses!'
Cissie swallowed. 'Who is this present for?'
One of the girls lifted a pair of black sunglasses from the display. 'Shuperboy. We're going to hish memorial.'
'I couldn't handle it sober,' said the other girl, poking the bear's tummy. 'It's so sad. He was so young.'
'I met him onesh when he wash giving auto... auto... signing shtuff. He gave me a kiss on the cheek.' She smiled at the memory. 'He said I wash his Shuperbabe, and flew off.'
Her friend sniffled. 'He said I was his Superbabe.'
They burst into giggles.
Cissie reached for Superbear and stood up, walking to the register. With a metal hook she carefully undid the stitching on the back and pulled out the heart. The girls watched curiously as she picked up a pen and wrote something on the heart, before dropping it back into the bear and tieing it up again.
'There you are.' She smiled, for the first time that day. 'I think he would have liked it.'
'Really?'
'Oh yeah. His room was filled with teddy bears.'
The girls stared.
Cissie cleared her throat. 'It'll be forty bucks.'
'Thanks,' said one as she gave cash. 'But what did you write on the-'
Cissie opened the register. 'Kon.' She placed the bear into a big white bag and handed the present over. 'His name is Kon.'
'But-'
'The bus to Centennial Park leaves in a few minutes. Say hi for me, will you?'
She watched the girls leave, arm around each other's shoulders for support. 'Boss-lady?'
The manager came up to the register, scowling. 'I told you not to call me that.'
'Whatever. I'm taking my break.' She removed the apron and slung it over a chair. With an offhand wave to the manager's glare, she gravitated to the assembly line. Out of the open bins, she selected a reddish bear, a red and white shirt, and a pair of yellow goggles.
'Ta-da,' she whispered. 'Imp-bear.'
