In the absence of critical reporting by the LA Times, I've been relying on the LA Weekly every Thursday or so. True, it's unashamedly liberal and filled with dodgy personal and sex ads, but the political commentary slays me.

Here are this week's must-reads:

Then, following Governor Sarah Palin's speech, one of the women turned to me and said, "I hope Obama's girls watched that and said, 'I want to be like that [woman] one day.'" -- Vanessa Silverton-Peel reporting on the Republican National Convention

Yosi Sergant and the Art of Change: The Publicist Behind Shepard Fairey's Obama Hope Posters

You'll Never Be Vice President: A Letter to My Daughter, the Community Organizer

How LA's Mayor Villaraigosa Spends His 16-Hour Days -- Makes a person really miss Jim Hahn.

And while a syndicated column and not exclusive to LA Weekly, I must add a link to this week's Savage Love. Not only does it give an example of how good Dan Savage is at providing common sense advice in regards to complicated love/sex life conflicts, it succinctly expresses the outrage at the hypocritical response to Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

Speaking of hot teenagers and asshole parents and vows that you may come to regret...
