SDCC '09: Umm... DC Comics

First of all, Dan Didio gave away lantern shirts. He asked for suggestions on who would be the most worthy for these individual lanterns. For instance, the orange 'avarice' shirt went to a smartass who yelled 'I WANT THAT SHIRT'. The Green Lantern 'willpower' shirt went to a kid dressed as Ganthet. The Sinestro Corp 'fear' shirt went to a fan who confided to Didio and the audience, 'I'm afraid you don't have any shirt under that.' My favourite would have to be the guy who won the 'hope' blue lantern shirt, who said he hoped Twilight doesn't come back next year. Then for some reason Didio had an Urkel shirt, which I guess symbolises 'nerdity'? In case you're wondering, the guy who won the Sapphire shirt kissed Didio's head for it, so that must be love.
J Michael Straczynski will be writing the Brave & the Bold. Am I the only one who reads that book? C'mon people, you're missing out on some great stories and art. I highly rec the recent GL/Phantom Stranger team up. Hell, I might as well post that soon.
Doom Patrol monthly. I knew this in advance but still nearly peed my pants. Why? Metal Men's the second feature. SWEET.
Then Geoff Johns, closest thing to a god I might believe in, talked about Flash and some whatever called Blackest Night. He said there'll be a new speedster coming out of Flash: Rebirth and had mentioned Max Mercury in a previous panel. Johns says the issue Blackest Night Flash will answer lingering questions about Captain Boomerang II. Well, okay, as long there's love for a long-missing member of the Flash family. Owen is so moe, I tell you.
So this Blackest Night thing had it's own panel and Johns waxed philosophical about the different emotions and stuff. Like, the reason why Blue lanterns are able to have firepower around GLs is because hope creates action through willpower. Or something, I was too impressed with how much Johns thought this out to really listen. There'll be lots of devastating reunions from Ted and Booster (quoth Johns 'heartbreaking') to former JSAs with the JSA trinity (ohhh damn, Damage's gotta have a lot to say to his dad). And as for kickass moments: female Dr Light vs bad Dr Light. BOO YA.
Incidentally, when asked who the audience would like to see return in Blackest Night the answers were:
- Aquaman
- Ted Kord
- Jesus
- Steve Rogers
- Michael Jackson
In that order. Shows where our priority as fans are. Except for the dude who came to the DC panel as Blackest Night Captain America.
In terms of teams we hoped would stopped sucking finally, the new JLA will consist of: Donna Troy, Mon-El, Batman (Dick Grayson), GL (Hal), and a Gorilla. Kong, I think.
Did I mention JSA splitting into 2? I knew I meant to post a JSA post; that panel was hilarious with Jimmy Palmiotti impersonating Stan Lee brutally. So, there'll be two monthly JSA titles with the teaser image appearing as though Stargirl is on one and Cyclone is on another (noooo).
Guess what? Titans will have a new leader. Some dude named Deathstroke, remember him? Adding to DC's recent acquisition spree, Thunder Agents will be incorporated into the DC universe. I have no idea who they are, but since everyone above forty seems pumped I am too.
File this under 'more please, homina homina': there will be a 2 issue story where Black Canary and Wonder Woman go undercover as cage fighters. Then WW will renounce the gods and no longer be an Amazon, blah blah blah. CAGE FIGHT!
DC promises big plans for Connor Hawke in 2010, and Paul Dini on a Zatanna series but to tell the truth I kinda fell asleep with my eyes open except to shout out something about wanting more Legion. YOU CAN'T HAVE TOO MUCH LEGION. FUCK WHY CAN'T I FIND THE LAST ISSUE OF LEGION OF 3 WORLDS I KEEP GETTING SPOILED.
Am losing my buzz. Tomorrow is Smallville. Will need all the help I can get~
