Aug. 10th, 2009 12:05 pmI thought what I was going to do was take a class on Java for the fun of it. Then I started scrolling through the computer science programs offered by the community colleges, and there are certificates that could possibly mean career placement (network management, web programming etc). At this point of time I don't know if it's something I want to jump into, but it sounds like an interesting option. It also makes me wonder, in terms of job opportunities would it make more sense to go the Bachelor's route or through a vocational college providing a certificate instead? If anyone on the flist has any advice or stories, it'd be much appreciated!

Date: 2009-08-10 08:03 pm (UTC)Management Information Systems -- you'll take several business classes in this "a lot like computer science, but with out the heavy math" major. You won't as much writing the next gen of sofware as much as figureing out the best ways to use it.
Various Industry Standard Certifications -- are pre-requisites for certain jobs and many times, what they're looking for doesn't necessarily require the BA/BS route.
Several people down in Systems and Web Development where I work actually degrees that are not in IT, but they have that additional vocational certification and that's how they qualified for these jobs. (Seriously, one of them has his degree in Geography.)
I suggest taking that class on Java for the fun of it. And then, if you really enjoyed what it was, try that class on network managment. And if that's what you liked, then I would look at the 4 year course of study and talk to somebody in academic advising about exploring all your options.
The certifications will help you land jobs now.
