And that was what my day was like... Thank you for the kind birthday wishes everyone! And thank lots for the luverly virtual gifts that are sitting pretty in my profile page :D Birthdays used to be something I dreaded for years, and happily yesterday was not the case.

Also, I have $20 in store credit at my LCS! Brilliant news as I am quite broke D: Haven't the faintest of what to purchase, partly because I will be putting up all of my comics on eBay in a few weeks. I'm moving away in December, and will not be able to bring anything that won't fit into my suitcase with me. So it's gotta be good, and it's gotta be something that I can stash with me. If only my LCS sold the Wildcat action figure I've been lusting over for months! That would solve my problem.

I finally was able to watch Good Hair, which I enjoyed tremendously. Y'know, it was me and two older white ladies in the theatre, and I had wondered what they thought of the documentary. It's not meant to be an extensive immersion into the discussion of Black hair (I know I really wanted to know more about natural hair styles, for instance) but perhaps even then it might come as a surprise to non African-Americans. Like the scientist who appeared flabbergasted that people would put the active ingredient in many relaxers on their hair. Or the amount of money it takes for a weave's upkeep. Hair in the African-American community is such a complex issue with many fascinating conundrums, and I would easily recommend it.

And awkward subject matter change -- Halloween and NaNo are just around the corner, folks! Can you feel it? :D

I don't know if you read the blog I linked to on the subject, but apparently if you'd seen Chris Rock's talk show appearances, his motives for making the documentary become much more suspect. Seems he's more devoted to the cult of straight hair than he lets on in the movie. So it makes sense that he didn't give much time to the subject of natural hair.

My friend and hairdresser said there's no way any of the women in that one salon was paying $1000 for those particular weaves, that they were playing up for the camera. Not that there aren't thousand-dollar weaves, those just didn't look like it, lol.

When I was watching the film, I understood two things: a) Chris liked the theatricality of hair, b) he's only going to show what he's interested in, and not exactly educate. He's coming from a comedy background, so it made sense he wants to entertain his audience and put forth his point of view. So to me, I got why he didn't go further into natural hair. I wouldn't say he's 'devoted' to straight hair, it just seemed like he wasn't interested in adding it to the documentary.

And yeah, that was my thought on those weaves too. They were ugly D:

Based on what I heard about his TV appearances, I'd say devoted is the right word.
