1. Hareluya Hibino, from Hareluya II Boy

The short-tempered, seemingly unstoppable son of a minister who, with the help with friends he makes along the way, battles against the injustices (bullies, drug dealers, rapists etc) of the world. Blessed with utterly charming cockiness and the strength of 10 men, Hareluya is the smart-ass hero you can't help but like. Sure he and his dad engage in all-out fights to see who is stronger, sure he falls asleep in class, and yes, he loves to assign embarrassing nicknames to everyone he meet, but it's all part of the charm. See when he fights, it isn't for the sake of gratuitous violence. Hareluya steps in situations where others are taken advantage of to make things right. With this in mind, the manga is a mix of comedy, social commentary, pumped-up testosterone, and ode to friendship. For more, why not read the series at Mangavolume?

2. Hanamichi Sakuragi, from Slam Dunk

Another 90s manga character. Slam Dunk is what inspired me to join the basketball team, and Hanamichi's complete newbishness to the sport was what kept me going. A short-tempered redheaded delinquent struggling to find a girlfriend who wouldn't run away at first chance, Hanamichi on the spur of the moment pretends to be a basketball player to impress a girl. After a series of humiliating events (he accidentally pulls down the pants of the big brother of the girl he likes for example) and spurred on by his crush, he joins the high school team and ends up falling in love with the sport. By the end of the series, Hanamichi learns to control that temper and redirect the energy into becoming a great player for himself, not for anyone else.

3. Hal Jordan
Not my Green Lantern, as GL fans are fond of saying. Kyle Rayner's my first, Guy Gardner's my favourite, but Hal's definitely grown on me. Doesn't hurt the recent Green Lantern Secret Origins makes him more relatable and yummy :P Talented though arrogant, Hal is the definition of alpha-male; boys want to be him, girls want him. There's this bad-boy appeal to him, with the deep sense of grievance and rage Hal carries about underneath the hotshot personality. It's the tragic flaw that grounds his character from what may be the perfect life. Without this edge, I think his character would be rather forgettable.

4. Harry Potter
Once a curious naive youngster, Harry trounced his fears to be the saviour of the wizarding world. Though I still see him as having the charisma of cardboard, Harry's nonetheless the classic heroic figure sacrificing much for the sake of others. There's been plenty of times where I wished the book would abandon Harry as the narrator and pick someone more interesting, like Lupin to tell this story. It could be how Harry is written; in the movies Daniel Radcliffe plays the character so winningly, you can't possibly cheer against him.

5. Hitman
Tommy Monaghan, the wise-cracking killer with telepathy and x-ray vision. Not quite the hero or the anti-hero, Tommy is nonetheless sympathetic for a man who makes his living taking the lives of others. This is the sort of guy called up to the Watchtower for possible membership and only shows up just to x-ray Wonder Woman. Sweet, moralistic in a way, and the sort of guy you'd love to have a drink with at the bar.

Harry ... *shakes head sadly* I started out in HP, and I gotta say, I agree with most things you said (I was wishing for Snape narration, though).

Wanna hit me back? Gotta wait til Wednesday for results, though.

I prefered Kyle as well. I never really took to Hal, I think I was the only person who didn't mind the whole Parallax storyline.

Give us a letter then.

Count me in as someone who thought the Parallax story wasn't as bad as everyone said! One bright spot were the issues where Kyle goes back in time and meets up with past!Hal and agonises whether to reveal the future. At the truth Past!Hal understandably becomes inconsolable, future!Hal shows up to kill Past!Hal and Kyle tries to explain to both how Hal's still a hero nonetheless. Pretty deep for a superhero comic.

Hmmm... How about N?

Oh, Hal. He manages to be fun as a fictional character while maintaining all the traits that would make me punch him in the face if he were real. it's good fun that way.

Give me a letter, please?
