Tonight's Simpsons was *nods* fantastic! Let's go down the list of what constitutes a fantastic episode, shall we:

- Poking fun at repetitive comic book covers (Death of Superman, Death of Aquaman, Death of Casper the Friendly Ghost)
- Jack Black as a hipster comic book store owner (with a girlfriend named Strawberry who has a lunchpail as a purse)
- Korean-language cover of Tom Jones' 'What's New Pussycat' (my favourite track as an impressionable little girl)
- Dan Clowes wanting to work on the Batman comics and showing off his ideas for the utility belt
- Alan Moore calming down by reading Little Lulu and singing the theme song
- A buff Art Spiegelman wearing a Maus mask, saying 'MAUS IS IN THE HOUSE!'
- 'League of Extraordinary Freelancers'
- Baby Watchmen DVD!

Hee. A perfect set-up for this comics post I think. Ready? Let's start things off with:

More on this later...

My guilty pleasure of late has been the Black Adam's miniseries. It's a veritable orgy of violence and kick ass-ery (I know, not a word) I'm surprised there isn't a bigger fuss. For instance:

And this is the fourth issue - it's just getting better and better. Later he undergoes surgery without anaesthetic, kills an assassin by sticking him in the path of a lightning streak, and tops it off by flying into space with another assassin until said person literally crumbles from the pressure. SO badass. (I couldn't stop gasping during the entire book and saying things like 'That is so cool.' )
In terms of story it's romantic in theory: Black Adam has lost his powers and wants to bring back his wife from the dead, fails and bargains with evil magician dude to bring back said missing powers and search for wife's remains to try again. The whole world is against him in this quest, it seems, because of his acts that brought about World War III after said wife was murdered. But I tend to forget all this and just concentrate on the raison d'etre of the mini-series, which is to show how awesome Black Adam is. Definitely the book for the 12 year-old boys in all of us.

In other news, Batman saves his baby mama, discovers his son has gone to Wayne Manor for help, but still has the time for a little snark in the relaunched Batman And The Outsiders.

Unhappy former Outsider Thunder inadvertently outs her and Grace's relationship a few pages later. Batman's reaction have had some uproar as it is deemed homophobic (here at scans_daily). I thought Batman acted a little uncomfortable not because the discussion was about two women, but because it involved two members of his team. But *shrugs* I guess it really depends at how you look at it. What really peeved me off was this:

I'm all for bums and all, but seriously, does it HAVE to be the focus in every other panel? I'm exaggerating of course, but I'm truly sick of having something like this detract from the story. I can't take Catwoman seriously if I'm being bombarded by her (admittedly sexy) bum. There are women who read comics too you know.

Which is why I'm glad to read Nightwing's bum get some notice in the latest Nightwing issue.

And I'll admit to staring a little too long at his appearance as the original Robin in the Titans East Special.

Short pants. I'll take it however it comes, yo.

In keeping with the trying to avoid more bad women depiction, I decided to pick up Wonder Woman. I wouldn't say I'm a fan. I mean she's known as a feminist icon, and there's a certain de rigueur to like her, but I really don't know. There's never been anything that'll appeal to me, personally since I watched the show as a kid. Besides I'm more of a Catwoman girl, and I certainly identify with the previous craziness and thievery, and even her recent personality change.
A new writer's come onboard WW so I thought, why not? Couldn't be worse than Amazons Attack. I'm not convinced to pick up the next issue, and the only thing that I found amusing was this:

God, talking apes speculating on your sex life. And I thought nosy Asian Aunties was bad.

And back to the first pic of naked Oliver Queen running from two Amazon guards. I'm not the Ollie/Green Arrow expert, that's more Sal's thing, but Judd Winnick's actually livened things up. Judd's always got flack from me, especially with the crap he wrote during his Green Lantern run (the Kyle Rayner-era), and when we learned he'd be writing this mini series me and Sal cynically trash-talked the idea. I'm not going to say I was wrong, but the second issue of the Green Arrow & Black Canary teamup was entertaining and funny. The real star however, is Cliff Chiang whose artwork is gorgeous:

It's like a makeup lesson! How does he get that perfect blush? And Canary's eyeshadow? And those nails! Finally, someone who can draw women not as tits on a stick.

That's my comics rant for a while. I can't believe I'm spending so much on comics every week that's almost exclusively DC Comics, but I don't really regret as long as quality keeps churning them out. My new thing is to look for a comic book store that's more people-accessible than the current one I frequent. Instead of keeping my fangirl self in the dark, the next step is to reach out and meet others other than on the 'net.

But only after Nano :D

Oh, I am having so much love for the Black Adam mini-series, too.

And that thing with Al having the ring finger? Oh, that is so slashy and twisted, and also, slashy.
